Fly Fishing at The Home Ranch
The Home Ranch, an Orvis endorsed lodge, has almost three miles of the Elk River flow through the property. Also, a private pond that is stocked with rainbow trout sits behind the lodge.
The Elk is a classic rocky mountain freestone river that supports abundant populations of wild rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout. While the average trout is ten to sixteen inches in length, several rainbows are caught each year that reach twenty inches in length.
The Home Ranch provides rods, waders and flies for our guests to use, but we also realize that you may be more comfortable with your personal equipment and encourage you to bring it. Keep in mind that the river level changes significantly throughout the season. During spring runoff the river is almost unfishable. Depending on snowfall amounts, it usually begins to drop around the first of July and continues its descent throughout the rest of the summer. The best
nymph fishing is usually in mid-July as the river begins to warm and descend (some of the largest trout are caught this time of year). The best dry fly fishing is usally in August and September. The fall is a great time of year to hunt for trophy rainbows and browns with large streamer patterns.
